Matthias Schönijahn is an interdisciplinary artist who is researching ecological entanglement through techniques and technologies of deep listening.Through his research-based approach, he investigates bio-relational aesthetics and temporary collective structures, manifesting in videos, sound works, and performative installations. After studying Literature, Sociology, and Media Studies in Potsdam, he completed his Applied Theatre Studies (B.A. and M.A.) with distinction in Giessen.
His works have been presented at venues across Europe, including Nowy Teatr Warsaw, Spielart Festival Munich, European Center for the Arts Dresden Hellerau, and major Berlin institutions such as Hebbel am Ufer and SOPHIENSÆLE. His practice extends into museum contexts, with exhibitions at Senckenberg Museum Frankfurt am Main, Naturhistorisches Museum Bern, and SOMOS Gallerie Berlin.
As a collaborative artist, Matthias works with renowned practitioners like Wojtek Blecharz, Martyna Poznańska, Paulina Miu Kühling, Tereza Yakovyna and Otucha-Collective. In 2024, he co-founded Soll & Werden e.V. with Lisa Schettel, Constantin von Thun, Dr. Anett Laue, and Jasna Witkoski, an organization dedicated to artistic production, research, and education. His commitment to advancing experimental music theatre is evidenced by his involvement in Zeitgenössisches Musiktheater Berlin and his role as co-founder of Netzwerk freies Musiktheater. Currently he is serving on the Music Advisory Board of Kulturraum GmbH Berlin.
Matthias work has garnered recognition, including grants from the German Capital Fonds, Fonds Darstellende Künste, and Berlin Senat. The video work BREAKING NEWS received the B3 Newcomer Award ‚BEN‘ at the B3 Biennale des bewegten Bildes 2013 in Frankfurt. Beyond his artistic practice, he dedicates time to facilitating self-help groups in developing Radical Therapy methodologies.
